DIY Travel Album: Capturing Memories of France

Blending Paper, Memories, and Keepsakes for a Journey Inspired by France

Every scrapbook tells a story. For my holiday in France album, the cover page needed to capture both the anticipation and the joy of travel. As I began planning, I knew I wanted the design to be evocative—a blend of elegance, nostalgia, and personal touches that would invite anyone opening the album to step into my French adventure.

The foundation for this page was Stampin’ Up’s Wildly Flowering Designer Series Paper. Its soft botanical prints immediately reminded me of the lush gardens and wild meadows I’d encountered across the French countryside. The organic patterns and natural colors provided the perfect backdrop. They hinted at the beauty and tranquility I found during my travels. Layering this paper set the tone for everything that followed—a subtle celebration of nature and French charm.

To create the title, I embossed cardstock with Stampin’ Up!’s Glass & Gardens embossing folder for texture, then cut each letter using SU’s Alphabet Party dies. I finished by inking the edges with SU’s Misty Moonlight ink for a subtle, vintage effect that ties the cover together.

To bring dimension and a sense of intrigue, I reached for my earthen toned metallic paper. Using the Stampin’ Up Tags To Go Stamp & Die set, I crafted a decorative key and lock motif to anchor the cover page. These elements weren’t just embellishments—they symbolized discovery and unlocking new experiences, echoing the sense of wonder I felt arriving in France at Christmas time. The metallic sheen added a sophisticated touch, glinting in the light and offering a subtle nod to classic French artistry and ironwork. Every time I look at the key and lock, I’m reminded that every journey opens doors to new stories and memories.

No cover is complete without a touch of ink. I used SU’s Early Espresso to gently blend the edges of the paper layers. This softened the transitions. SU’s Wild Wheat ink delivered a warm, gold hue like vintage holiday ornaments.

I wanted to add a hint of sparkle and tradition. So, I included an ornament from the now retired Close To My Heart Silver Bells stamp & die set. I colored it with SU’s alcohol markers. Nestled among the floral designs, this embellishment adds a touch of the Christmas celebration. It ties together the themes of travel, nostalgia, and joy. It’s a small detail, but one that adds depth and character, making the cover page truly special.

Of course, no cover page would be complete without images that mark the beginning of the journey. I selected photos from my arrival in France—moments filled with excitement and curiosity. These photos were first shared on Instagram. Now, they find a place at the forefront of my album. They offer a visual anchor to the memories within. Every glance at these images takes me back to the anticipation and thrill of stepping onto French soil. I was ready to explore everything from bustling Christmas markets to peaceful countryside lanes.

Creating the cover page for my holiday in France album was more than just crafting. It was an act of remembrance and celebration. Each choice was guided by the experiences and emotions I wanted to preserve. This included choices from the papers to the ink and from the metallic accents to the ornament. The result is a page that sets the stage for the album. It also captures the spirit of adventure, wonder, and nostalgia. These elements defined my journey.
