Versailles Scrapbook Layout Begins | Holiday in France Album

Cover Pages

The Versailles section of my Holiday in France album is officially underway, and I’m so excited to share the first pages with you.

For this project, I wanted the layout to feel like more than just a collection of photos — I wanted it to feel like an experience. My goal was to design pages that make the viewer feel as though they are walking through the Palace of Versailles, taking in the beauty, history, and elegance of each space.

Design Concept — A 6-Page Fold-Out Experience

For this album, I’m using a 6-page fold-out layout created with a strap-hinged page system. This structure allows the pages to unfold into large continuous spreads, keeping the entire experience connected rather than divided across separate layouts.

This format works beautifully for documenting major events, travel memories, or photo series you want to keep together as one cohesive story. I’ve even used this design in my grandchildren’s baby albums to highlight special milestones and professional photo sessions.

In an upcoming tutorial, I’ll be sharing how to create this fold-out structure step by step.

Planning the Versailles Pages

When I first began planning these pages, I wasn’t sure how to document our Versailles photos. The palace was incredibly crowded the day we visited, and the scale of the building made it difficult to capture clean images without large groups of people or challenging angles.

After reviewing the photos, I decided to approach the design differently by using:

  • Collages to capture the scale and experience
  • Gallery-style layouts to highlight details
  • Sectioned storytelling to avoid overwhelming the viewer

The cover pages introduce the entrance and the first rooms we experienced, building anticipation for the four-page fold-out layout that will follow.

Photo Selection & Storytelling

The cover pages focus on the experience of approaching the palace:

  • The equestrian statue of Louis XIV
  • The ornate entrance and surrounding architecture
  • Views of the palace from across the street
  • The first rooms and grand staircase

I also included flip flaps to add additional photos without crowding the layout, allowing more storytelling while maintaining visual balance.

Color & Design Inspiration

To reflect the richness and elegance of Versailles, I chose a color palette inspired by old-world design:

  • Pecan Pie for warmth and depth
  • Lost Lagoon for richness and balance
  • Basic Beige for a soft vintage base
  • Gold accents for luxury and elegance

French design is often defined by rich textures layered with color, so I incorporated vintage inking, stamped textures, and layered embellishments to create that museum-like atmosphere.

The Delicate Whispers stamp and die set added a soft, romantic elegance that complements the ornate details of the palace.

Creating a Vintage, Old-World Feel

To build depth and texture, I used:

  • Vintage ink blending
  • Background stamping
  • Layered papers and textures
  • Gold embellishment clusters

These techniques helped create movement and dimension across the pages while maintaining a cohesive design.

Even if you don’t use strap-hinged albums, many of these techniques — including background building, color layering, and embellishment placement — can be used in any scrapbook project.

What’s Coming Next

This is just the beginning of the Versailles experience.

In Part 2, I’ll show how I stretch this design across the four interior fold-out pages and bring the full layout together. You’ll see how the pages expand into large continuous spreads and how the design creates an immersive storytelling experience.

I’ll also be sharing an upcoming tutorial showing how to build the 6-page strap-hinged structure.
